Our History

The more you know about the past, the better prepared you are for the future.

— Theodore Roosevelt

While we like to dream about the future, our history is important because it provides us with our sense of identity and purpose. It also tells us what worked in particular situations in the past and what didn't. In this sense, our history is essential in helping us to be better – and at Novelli, we are all about being the best!

The Pinker family started manufacturing New Zealand made garments, predominantly wet weather clothing and outdoor apparel – at their Queen Street premises.

The business becomes New Zealand’s leading raincoat manufacturer securing an agreement to supply the military during the Second World War.

By 1950 the family business had grown to employ over 250 staff. This resulted in a move to a new, larger premises in Auckland as well as diversification in to the bulk fabric and lingerie markets.

During the 60’s the company sold its outdoor apparel arm of the business and expanded their bulk fabrics and lingerie arms. Manufacturing plants were set up by the company in Takapuna, Milford and Tauranga.

The business moved again to more suited premises on Broadway in Newmarket. During this time, the company began importing specialised fabrics such as lace and silk to manufacture women’s night gowns.

The lingerie arm of the business was sold (and still forms part of Bendon/Berlei today). The bulk fabrics business developed and so did a blank t-shirt range. The company moved to Wellesley St West. In the 1980’s the business went on to become a leading importer of apparel.

By 1990 the company was the largest supplier to the New Zealand apparel market. This is in addition to becoming specialists in merchandise sourcing.

Expansion saw the company become a significant player in the promotional apparel and merchandise markets throughout Australasia.

Novelli was registered in Australia.

Expansion saw a move to a large new building in Albany. Novelli diversified into importing custom promotional apparel and merchandise for the corporate sector.

The business purchased two New Zealand apparel companies – Glenbrook Apparel & Cloud Clothing – to increase market share in wholesale garments.

Novelli is the largest stockist of blank apparel in New Zealand and a leading importer of promotional products to large corporates in both New Zealand and Australia.
